It has been a grey and wet day in WNC.
Not sure about the rain totals. The once trusty Ray’s Weather station located on the top of Mast General Store claims that we have had just over 1.1 inches as of 7:00 PM. That is the heaviest inch of rain I have ever seen. My own rain gauge had an inch early in the day, and it has poured for a few more hours. The dog doesn’t even want to go outside it is so wet. Based on my intuition, we have had over 2 inches. I’ll report when it is dry enough to go out and check the gauge.
As for all of the garden chores planned for the weekend, those went down the drain. I have some grape tomatoes that i was planning to uproot today. i was also going to move some boxes around and do some planting. Didn’t happen.
Looks like it will be a Sunday afternoon in the garden…never fear, I find it meditative and relaxing.
Ah, it is about 11:15 AM in Waynesville–the temperature climbed from a low of about 60 degrees at 7:30 AM to a pleasant 68 degrees. Any of my friends in Florida or Alabama jealous?
It is just one of the many things i like about my mountain home–the weather is gorgeous for most of the year, even the winters are tolerable.
Though the Farmer’s Almanac gave me reason to think:
Like snow? Count the number of fogs
Looks like we are in for no less than 6 days of snow this winter based on the number of foggy mornings…
Two days, almost 8/10 inch of rain. Things are moist in the mountains.
The temperature is not high–about 73 degrees right now in Waynesville.
Humidity- 75% (It has dropped almost 8 points since the earlier rain)
We have a cold front that has sort of staalled over the region that promises the possibilities of more rain the rest of the week.
What does that do for the garden?
- It is hard to get in to weed, spray or even pick vegetables (unless you are in my Square Foot Garden where I am not weeding, spraying, and i can still pick because the aisles are dry)
- It makes it difficult to work on other outdoor projects
- But the garden can use the water–maybe a few more pounds growth on the big pumpkin, a few more vegetables…
How is your weather?
I took a look at the rain gauge at lunch this afternoon. With the storm that blew through last night, I registered 1 inch of rain in the garden. The weather station in downtown Waynesville only recorded .64 inches.
For the month of July, I have recorded 3.5 inches. The same station has only recorded 2.48 inches.
It is less than a half mile to Mast General Store (station is on the roof). Explanation, there is much variance in micro-climates that has to be recognized.
If there is this much difference between rain gauges just several blocks apart, you know there is serious variance in a region.
How much rain are you getting this summer?
